New Life - Birth of Beans

Just to get you jazzed up about the miracle of life...

These are the scenes you will witness when you grow your own vegetables!  But just to warn you, it goes a bit slower than on tv. Gardening is a slow thing - slow and filling.

Easy Vegetable Gardening

This blog is to help make vegetable gardening easy for people who haven't done it before, or people who did try it and didn't find it easy.

I find most gardening books give me information overload, or they are intimidatingly perfectionist. Web sites are mostly jumbled and confusing and contradict each other.

So to make growing a garden easy, and to avoid information overload, this blog will proceed step by step, week by week, just telling you what you need to do next.  Yes, it can be easy, and it's not that much work, either.

To help keep it simple, we:
  • keep it small (keeps the work load down)
  • go week by week (keeps the mental work load down)
  • grow only easy plants (see the short list)
  • use easy, natural methods (effective modern organic approaches)

You can grow almost anywhere, too, as long as there's enough sun. On a balcony, in your flower beds, in pots on your porch: those can all be good options.

So if you'd like to grow some vegetables but think it's too hard, this blog is for you. Follow along, and I'll take you step by step through the gardening year.

I'll be timing the instructions for Toronto - taking into account the weather and so forth. But if you're somewhere outside of the Toronto area, let me know in the comments, and I'll try to give you some hints about what to do differently.

What now?

Want to get started?  It's still only February, but you could take a look at the easy vegetables short list.

Or do you doubt it can really be easy?  Read more about how we keep it simple.

Want to know more about container gardening?  This Toronto book project proposal includes some video footage which might give you ideas (even though the book isn't published yet).

Or just check back next week for the first step: Choosing your plot.
